Dear Dale,
While the leaves are starting to Fall here in Alabama, the temperature is finally cooling off. It was a hot August! In response, here at AskDrCallahan, we were staying indoors. Which means, we've done more work for you!
In this newsletter we highlight one of the common questions we get on geometry as well as college. We are excited to be able to serve with you, and we hope this information helps you as you plan the year!
Don't forget to let us know what you think about us. We would love to know what products you would like to see from us, as well as to hear your suggestions and comments.
We are always updating and trying to improve so that we can provide you with the best products and services, so please help us by taking our survey. |
Is College for everyone?
When you attend a graduation, the first question we ask a graduate is "Where are you going to college?"
We assume that they will be going since in order to get a good job or to get ahead in life they will need a good degree from an accredited university. But is it really needed?
While we do not argue that the stats show college graduates "do better" than those who do not have degrees in terms of some measures. But we also know that their is a lot more information underneath any statistical study. Fact is many without college have done very well - in many cases better than those with college degrees.
Our view is simple, college is an investment of money and time. Will this investment pay off? Soemtimes yes, sometimes no! So look carefully.
However, we DO encourage advanced education. But let me just remind you that you do NOT need a bunch of higher than mighty college faculty (yes - like me) to get a better education.
We will have a LOT more on this topic later. To get some thoughts on this see the article at Crosswalk.

Extreme Makeover:
Textbook Edition
Several years ago Harold Jacobs updated his geometry textbook to the 3rd edition - but many have told us the 2nd edition is superior. The result was some investigation into the differences and the claims of parents. See some details of the conversations Dr. Callahan had with Harold Jacobs about just that issue...er, edition. GEOMETRY
In this course we have attempted to find a textbook that is both solid in its treatment of geometry as well as filled with applications of the subject. Almost every example and problem deals with a real-life geometrical application - even those problems that deal in proofs.
