  1. ADC + Jacobs = Success

Posted by Shari F. on 30th Dec 2011

When I was asked to write a review of our experience with Jacobs' Algebra 1 + ADC support materials, I thought, "Sure, it'll just take a minute." But as I sat here, while this blank box waited for me, I realized that my rather flippant response was, well, flippant. Our experience with this course was so positive on a number of levels, that it should be described carefully. I rely heavily on reviews when making my own curriculum choices, so I'm honored to add my endorsement of ADC's Algebra 1 course for the "next generation" of students.

I used Saxon's math through pre-algebra for all 3 of our kids. When the time came to enter Algebra 1, the troops were restless, feeling they had outgrown the Saxon method. On checking, I found that my kids' opinion of Saxon was typical among those who had "come up" through its regimen, and that switching to Harold Jacobs' Algebra was an excellent entre into college-prep work. So we took the plunge, and were hooked the first day.

Harold Jacobs' text is engaging without being condescending and thorough without being suffocating. This is not a typical textbook. He seems to know just how much introductory material the atudents are willing to read, getting right to the point of a lesson without breaking the attention-span barrier. He even treats us with cartoons or the odd tidbit that would seem out of place in an algebra textbook, but for the fact that they are directly relevant to the lesson at hand, making them even more entertaining. And when the proverbial two-and-two are, in fact, put together, we realize that we've just been treated to a snapshot of math's beauty and universality. Brilliant.

Each main chapter has a handful of related lessons, each divided into 4 sets for the seat-work. This method of warm-up (set 1), practice (set 2), more practice (set 3), and challenge (set 4) can be tailored to your routine. Set 3's problems are the same but different than Set 2, so your student will not lack for practice. Of note: as career Saxon-ites, we had always completed an entire lesson each day, typically taking 45-60 minutes to do so. Well, we entered into Jacobs' A-1 with the same mind-set, but shouldn't have! Save yourself from feeling inadequate (or, worse, unprepared for the course) when a lesson stretches longer than the hour to which you're accustomed, and find your own rhythm. We finally settled into a Set 1 + Set 2 on Day 1, and Do-Overs + Set 3 (With #4 optional for E.C.) on Day 2 of a lesson. This two-days-per-lesson routine suited us. I know the syllabus offers more of a shotgun approach, but I felt my kids needed to complete all of the problems. For easier lessons, the pattern of Set 1 + Set 2's odds on Day 1, then Do-Overs + Set 3's evens on Day 2 worked for us also.

** The course can be completely self-directed. There is no need to "teach" the material: with your oversight, Jacobs' text and ADC's support materials are all the student needs.
** The dvd's are really good to watch before beginning a new lesson. Cassidy does a great job, and that few minutes does make a difference. The kids just automatically integrated them into the classwork.
** The answer key is invaluable. I depended on it as a guide to help me "back into" the solution process when the kids needed help. Now, my algebra expertise would rank as "functionally illiterate", with 35 years between Third Period Algebra and now, but between the dvd's and the answer key, we managed just fine, as will you.
** All this said, the fifth star on the rating absolutely belongs to the store-front quality of personal support Cassidy, Lea and Dr. Callahan give their customers. E-mailed questions are answered within hours and are as thorough as you need them to be. Phone contacts are just as pleasant. I never once felt silly for asking a question because of the genuine desire to help I was shown.

I'm so very grateful that our college-prep math got off to such a great start, thanks to the Ask Dr. Callahan team. Their dedication is obvious; their heart for service is truly appreciated; and their talents are skilfully used. I can honestly say that we're looking forward to Geometry with confidence rather than trepidation because of our experience with ADC.

  2. Very pleased with Algebra I

Posted by Michelle Hadfield on 17th Apr 2011

My almost 14 year-old son is nearly finished with this program and we have been very pleased. The textbook is full of both real life applications (which he really needs) and great humor (which he really likes). The videos are clear and well presented with bits of humor and wisdom sprinkled in along the way. When we do have questions, Cassidy has always been quick to answer via an email.

I have really appreciated all the great advice and information given to the teacher. The schedule in the Syllabus has helped me to gauge the speed at which we actually end up working. Having a younger son (he was 12 when we started) we went slowly at first, but are now picking up the pace. I also really like the approach to test taking and have adopted it with the rest of my children. Being a homeschool family I love that my kids will be getting a strong math background using this program. Thanks Dr. Callahan (and Cassidy!).

We are looking forward to Geometry this fall.

  3. Great product

Posted by Deb W. on 12th Apr 2011

Overall, I am very pleased with this math course. The included syllabus and included tests, along with grading ideas, make this extremely easy to use. And the dvd's free up parents to allow for independent learning. Overall, I love this class for my kids and don't regret my purchase. That being said, I would like to see the solutions manual be a little more helpful with directing kids where they may have made their mistakes with solution processes, rather than just being an answer key. In fact, I think it is just an expensive answer key, and should include more. That is the only downside to this curriculum.

  4. great program for excellerated Algebra 1

Posted by Unknown on 3rd Mar 2011

I purchased this after trying several high school level Algebra 1 courses for my 11 year old son. He had previously used Calvert Math and was just too advanced for standard Algebra 1 courses. He is finishing Chapter 13 today and has really enjoyed the program thus far. There is plenty of instruction for him in the text and videos. I do wish there was a bit more to the answer keys at times. There are problems, especially in the later chapters, that it would be helpful to see more of the formulas and substitutions when the student (or parent) is unsure of how to go about a problem. However, I am sure that's what the online support is for, we just haven't needed it yet.

We are looking forward to trying the Geometry course next.
